Industry show to feature 22 Arab footwear importers

The International Leather and Footwear Fair will take place next week in Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul, and buyers from 45 countries are expected. Eight Arab countries will be represented.
São Paulo – The International Leather and Footwear Fair (SICC, in the Portuguese acronym) should welcome 22 importers from Arab countries this year. The event will run from Monday (23rd) to Wednesday (25th), at Serra Park, in Gramado, a city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Organizers are expecting six buyers from Saudi Arabia, five from the United Arab Emirates, five from Kuwait, two from Bahrain, one from Algeria, one from Oman, one from Syria and one from Sudan.
“We have determined that they are becoming loyal to our product, that they are attending the trade show and following up [with their deals],” says Roberta Pletsch, the Markets director with the expo’s organizer Merkator Feiras e Eventos. The importers have been invited by the organizers or referred by exhibitors. The executive says Brazilian companies make a point of bringing Arabs due to their potential for purchases and the acceptability of the Brazilian product. “The local industry is making products with the Arab market in mind,” she says.
The SICC will feature roughly 120 importing companies from 45 countries, as part of a project whereby Merkator meets travel, lodging and shuttle costs from state capital Porto Alegre to the city of Gramado. Besides the Arabs, attendance has been confirmed by buyers from South Africa, Angola, the Mauritius, Mozambique, Réunion, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Costa Rica, El Salvador, United States, Mexico, Germany, France, Japan, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Portugal and others.
“The exchange rate is favorable to the industry,” Pletsch says regarding the Brazilian scenario, where the US dollar is strong relative to Brazil’s real, thus making Brazilian enterprises more competitive on the international market when it comes to pricing. She also notes that the SICC, which started out as a domestically-oriented exhibition, is going increasingly global. “We are putting in more and more efforts to make it international,” she claims. International participation will be up 15% to 20% this year from 2015, according to the director.
The importers invited by Merkator will not partake in matchmaking events, but will circulate freely around the exhibition to choose the products they wish to buy. A rendezvous and support hub will be at their disposal at the SICC. In addition, they can use Espaço Exportação (the Export Space) to hold one-on-one meetings with importers.
In its 25th edition, the expo will feature 350 exhibitors. Spring/Summer collection shoes and accessories will be on show. Those two seasons account for 70% of production at Brazilian manufacturing plants, Pletsch says. Winter accounts for 30%.
