Overseas spending in May the lowest since 2009

Expenditure by Brazilian travellers in foreign countries reached USD 1.113 billion last month. Foreigner spending in Brazil climbed to USD 434 million.
Brasília – Spending by Brazilians in trips to foreign countries amounted to USD 1.113 billion in May of this year, the Brazilian Central Bank reported this Friday (24). It was the lowest amount for a May since 2009, when expenditure hit USD 779 million. In May 2015, overseas spending stood at USD 1.414 billion.
From January through May, Brazilians spent USD 5.161 billion abroad, down from USD 8.291 billion in the comparable period of 2015.
Spending by foreigners in Brazil reached USD 434 million in May and USD 2.754 billion from Jan to May, down from USD 417 million and USD 2.498 billion last year.
Foreigner spending in Brazil outweighed Brazilian spending abroad by USD 2.407 billion. By the end of the year, the Central Bank estimates the number should reach USD 6 billion.
