Brazil’s unemployment rate at 12.6%

Rio de Janeiro – Brazil’s unemployment rate stood at 12.6% in the quarter that ended in August of this year. In the quarter ended in May, it stood at 13.3%, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In August of 2016, the unemployment rate registered 11.8%. The data is from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) released this Friday (29) by the IBGE.

The employed population reached 91.1 million people in the country, up 1.5% (1.4 million people) in comparison to May and up 1% in comparison to August of last year. The increase in the numbers of the employed population was driven by the expansion of the informal labor market, since over half of the 1.4 million jobs created was without registration or self-employed.
