Government to register USD 47.99 bn deficit

Financial institutions expect the National Treasure, Social Security and Central Bank to register a deficit this year. The amount is higher than an earlier forecast.
Brasília – Financial institutions surveyed by the Ministry of Finance expect the Central Government (National Treasure, Social Security and Central Bank) to register a deficit of BRL 155.5 billion (USD 48.14 billion) for this year. The number is higher than an earlier deficit forecast of BRL 134.178 billion (USD 41.54). The forecast for 2017 also expects a deficit of BRL 129.279 billion (USD 40.03 billion). The previous forecast for next year called for a deficit of BRL 104.843 (USD 32.46 billion).
The forecasts are part of the Fiscal Prism survey, released this Thursday (14) by the Ministry of Finance’s Secretariat of Economic Policy. The report was based on data from June. The government’s official forecast for the public accounts in 2016 points to a BRL 170.5 billion (USD 52.79 billion) deficit. For 2017, it shows a deficit of BRL 139 billion (USD 43.04 billion).
