Project advises on creation of products for export

Exports promotion agency Apex-Brasil and Brazil Design Center opened registrations for companies interested in developing or tailoring products and packaging for exports.
São Paulo – Registrations are open for Brazilian companies interested in participating in a program to create or tailor products and packaging to the international market. The Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) is accepting entries until September 2. The initiative is a partnership with Brazil Design Center (CBD). The 108 companies selected will receive support for the development of their products.
Apex-Brasil’s competitiveness coordinator, Adriana Rodrigues, highlights design as an important tool for trade. “It helps with displaying a stronger presence in the outlet. It’s a competitive increment”, she said to ANBA, adding that the companies’ participation in the program brings about low-cost benefits.
This is the second edition of the program called Design Export. The first one ended in the middle of last year and generated many successful cases, according to Rodrigues. “The companies felt that it increased their international sales, some opened new markets, the results are tangible”, she says.
The program ultimately bred a culture of investing in the development of products for export. As of the first edition, 70% of the affiliates had never hired a design firm to create items or packaging for the international market, and took to doing it after the project.
To apply for Design Export, companies must be exporters or would-be exporters. They must pick a market, which could be a country or a part of the world. The work to be done can entail creating something completely new, adapting products to the markets at hand, improving product or packaging presentation, incorporating new technologies, etc.
Upon registering, applicants fill in a form with questions about the type of innovation intended, why exporting is important to them, etc. Once a company is selected, a consultant with a background in design and foreign trade makes a visit to assess the business and its needs. Then, a design firm will get assigned to work on that particular project. The firm selected will assist the business in tandem with the consultant.
Design Export will provide the businesses selected with the firm and the consultant’s work free of charge. However, businesses will have to meet the costs of actions such as adaptation of production, manufacturing of promotional material, purchase of molds and raw materials, etc. They will also be invited to join other export support projects of Apex’s, such as courses, sectorial programs, or the exports-oriented training and promotion project Projeto Extensão Industrial Exportadora (Peiex).
This is the second public notice issued by Apex and the CBD this year. The first one happened in the first half of the year; after this second notice, 200 companies will be involved. Each company will get BRL 18,000 in financial aid. The selected businesses will be announced in September. As per the public notice schedule, project implementation is slated for October or November 2017.
